BEYOND BOOZE:  how zero-alcohol drinks went from niche to mainstream

zero-alcohol drinks

The National trend in choosing non-alcoholic beverages is taking root in South Africa.

This is how the land lies at the moment, and if we do not do something about this, the consequences will be terrible.

While the South African no-alcohol sector is still in its infancy, more recently, there’s been somewhat of a revolution in the no and low (NoLo) with a clear and growing demand here, too.  There was a time not too long ago when your choices were extremely limited if you were going to a bar, restaurant or party and you wanted a sophisticated, non-alcoholic drink.

Alcohol consumption in South Africa is off the charts, although only 43% of adult men in our country drink, and about one in five women, consumption per drinker is so high that per capita consumption, which includes non-drinkers, is higher than most other countries.  That is because of the culture of drinking to intoxication, especially over weekends.  Adult per capita consumption in grams of absolute alcohol (AA) consumed per drinker is 64.6 gr of AA per day – the 6th highest globally according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

What’s driving this growth?

A growing awareness of health and wellness.  There is no doubt that people are increasingly aware of their physical and mental well-being and the effects that alcohol has on them.   In addition, we’ve seen a significant increase of the NoLo beverages that are available in our supermarkets.
