Spring clean your body for summer
It’s almost time to peel off those winter layers and get ready
for summer. In a last minute attempt to salvage the inevitable
winter weight gain and sluggish metabolism, many individuals
punish themselves (and their bodies) by undertaking drastic
cleanses or detoxes. This is often harmful if not carried our
Gently spring clean your body in time for summer using the 3
step process – cleanse, support and treat your liver.
Cleanse: Increase your water intake and decrease your
consumption of caffeine. This will assist in flushing out toxins and
regulate bowel movements. Saturated fats, refined sugar and
alcohol are bad for the liver and should be avoided.
Support: Fresh fruit and lightly steamed vegetables should be
eaten in abundance. Fruits rich in vitamin C such as citrus fruits
have a high detox potential as they are rich in antioxidants and
protect the liver. Good vegetable options include dark green
leafy vegetables as well as beetroot and pumpkin. Water
soluble fiber such as legumes and apple promotes increased
bile secretion. Whole grains, oily fish such as salmon and
sardines and nuts and seeds should be eaten in moderation.
Avoid wheat, salt and meat products.
Treat: In addition to a high potency vitamin and mineral
formula, vitamin C (1000mg daily) assists in protecting the liver
from free radical damage. Lipotrophic agents such as choline,
methionine or cysteine assist in enhancing the detoxification
process. Research has shown that milk thistle prevents liver
damage by acting as an antioxidant. Adequate rest is
imperative for the repair of the body and rejuvenation of the
mind. Ensure at least 6-8 hours daily.
