Can we change the world by changing our story?
“A very old wisdom story tells of a time when the world was
whole and perfect. A big accident scattered the world into
millions of tiny sparks of wholeness which settled everywhere;
in everything around us, in all events and in people too.
According to the story the purpose of humans are to discover
and uncover these sparks of wholeness hidden deep inside
everything and in people and to fit them all back together so
that the world can be whole again”.
In the days before the written word, stories were told in
communities to share and to teach. The above story is a story
about possibilities, about facing challenges with the belief
that, hidden in all challenges, there is a spark of potential
which can change the situation for the better.
We may argue that our current story is a story of chaos:
Almost daily, we are bombarded with bad news: crime,
corruption, strikes, unemployment, moral decline, financial
crises, power outages…. the list can go on and on. People are
worried about their physical and financial security. We vent
our concerns when we socialize. At our year-end functions,
we rant and rave about the injustices and we predict a dark
and gloomy future.
In stressful environments, people are less likely to take care
of their personal health. They consume more unhealthy
fare, make less time for fun and relaxation, spend less time
on healthy activities, sleep less and make less time for one
another and for their families. More people are suffering
from avoidable lifestyle diseases like diabetes, heart disease
and cancer, and more and more people need help with
emotional challenges like stress, depression, eating disorders
Imagine seeing the spark of possibility in all the challenges
How will it change the story of chaos if we were able to see,
in the midst of chaos, the potential for a perfect outcome?
How will it change the stories we tell to each other? What will
happen if each one of us focuses on that spark of possibility,
instead of our gloomy expectations? Yes, we cannot ignore
everything that is happening, but what will happen if each
one of us chooses to open up our minds to discover and
uncover that tiny spark of healing potential in everyone and
everything around us, and chooses to talk about that rather
than the chaos around us?
Can changing the theme of our story change the outcome? If
one tiny spark can start a runaway fire, imagine how millions
of sparks of hope can ignite and transform a potentially
hopeless story into a story of transformation and hope for all.
None of us know what the New Year holds for us. We can
not predict the future, but we have the power to influence
the outcome of all events and situations by choosing to talk
about a new story; a story of wholeness and hope for the year
